Varoulko Seaside
Athens, Greece
There’s an element of home-grown hero about this first-class seafood spot, located on a block of restaurants and bars in Athens’ port area. Founder Lefteris Lazarou was born minutes away from the restaurant and in 2002 became the first Greek chef to be awarded a Michelin star. When it opened in 1987, it was the first fine dining restaurant in the city to serve an exclusively seafood menu and to celebrate lesser-known fish. It may have moved once from its original address but still serves up the same winning combination of quality ingredients cooked with confidence. Lunch menus are simple and served meze style – get stuck in to grilled octopus, fish soup and sea bass carpaccio – while evenings focus on the traditional three-courses and Greek wine formula. Watching sailing boats bob on Mikrolimano Marina’s blue water as you feast is a major bonus.
