The Leela Palace
New Delhi, India
Though The Leela Palace New Delhi, in the city’s Diplomatic Enclave, is very much a modern-day palace, completed in 2011, it feels like it’s been there for ages. Sandwiched between leafy parks and embassies, it's built in the architectural style of Edwin Lutyens, who played an instrumental role in the construction of the Indian capital in the early 20th century. It’s a truly magnificent building (especially when floodlit at night) topped with golden domes. Inside, the luxuriousness continues with gold leaf, marquetry, chandeliers, carved ceilings and, everywhere you look, fresh flowers, which are delivered daily. The bespoke contemporary artwork deserves a special mention – look out for Satish Gupta’s extraordinary metallic mural of lotus flowers and his 16-foot Goddess Devi fashioned from bronze. There’s a double-storey spa, rooftop pool and you’ll dine like a king or queen in one of the four lavishly decorated restaurants, from sushi at Megu to modern Indian at Jamavar. The Indo-Victorian themed Library Bar is for cocktail drinking late into the night. Rooms and suites don’t let the side down with plush furnishings adorned with intricate royal motifs and oversized marble bathrooms – plus, of course, all the amenities you’d expect from a palatial stay.
