This isn’t your typical Balinese resort, but an eco-friendly retreat that invites guests to tune into their dream-like natural surroundings and contribute to its regenerative mission. Located just outside Ubud, the resort is set amid spring-fed pools, banyan trees, coconut palms and the bustling Ayung River. The hotel dates back to 2005, when owners John and Cynthia Hardy installed a series of Javenese bridal houses beside their own to accommodate friends and family. Over time, a carefully considered expansion saw these 11 whimsical structures grow into 24 – all crafted from bamboo or reclaimed teak, unique in their design, and connected via hand-laid stone paths and swinging bamboo bridges. Nature is the driving force of the entire experience: rooms are wall-less and naturally cooled, drinks are made with natural sweeteners and permaculture gardens provide the produce for longevity-boosting cuisine – served on banana leaf plates. Cement, plastic and chemicals have no place here, and guests help harvest rice paddies and collect rubbish during their stay. The Hardys still live next door, with the duo continually sourcing new ways to restore the natural environment – perhaps you’ll play a part in its next chapter, before it eventually composts back to Earth.
