Capella Ubud

Bali, Indonesia

Far-flung luxury is the USP of Capella Ubud. The only hotel located in the Keliki valley, it's a tent camp in concept alone – a more accurate description of designer Bill Bensely’s expedition-style hotel would be to call it an otherworldly jungle settlement. Surrounding by rice paddies, ancient stone villages and stretching palms, this explorer-inspired property uses adventure-book imagery to envelop guests in its magic. The 'essentials' offered upon arrival set the tone: backpacks of mosquito spray, anoraks and ear plugs to keep the tropical terrain palatable. From there, the Indiana Jones theme continues. Tents invoke the history of the spice trade with their ornately engraved woodwork, batik and ikat textiles and travellers' objects d’art (think, telescopes and compasses). All are accessed by suspension bridges, which lead onwards to a gym, spa, heated pool and two restaurants serving suitably adventurous menus. At Api Jiwa, a 10-course tasting menu offers Asian Omakase highlighting sustainable farmed ingredients, while Mads Lange’s chef Nicola Russo In need of a little Dutch courage before bedding down in the jungle? A tipple from the Mortar and Pestle Bar will help.
