Kikunoi
Kyoto, Japan
Take someone you really like to Kikunoi. This hallowed spot – which was first opened in 1912 and is headed up by third-generation chef-director Yoshihiro Murata – is made up of just 11 private rooms, austerely lined with tatami mats and little else. Your only entertainment will be your companion and 12 tiny, elaborate courses served by your personal hostess. In keeping with traditional kaiseki restaurants, Yoshihiro Murata's menus change daily to reflect the best of the season but are always presented with flare. For example, sashimi might be served with pickled Chinese chives and iris stalks, while mountain yam and octopus gelee could be crowned with delicate shisho flowers. Fans of Murata's work include lauded French chef Alain Ducasse and director-actress Sofia Coppola, so little wonder snagging a table can sometimes prove tricky.
