Located in Karatsu, in a former residence painstakingly renovated by its current owners, Arutokuro offers a lone set menu of beautifully executed Japanese cuisine. The dining room – all putty-coloured walls and teak seating – is notable for its harmonious design, as well as for having only two tables. Masterful chef Hirakawa Sunao sends out seasonally driven small dishes such as mackerel sashimi wrapped in slivers of daikon, and wild boar stew, while the drinks list showcases local sakes and good-value wines. Service is a highlight, with old-fashioned friendliness and hospitality having helped to cement the restaurant’s loyal following from locals and destination diners alike.
