Il Sorriso

Saga, Japan

Il Sorriso – ‘Smile’ in Italian – sports a pared-back, monochromatic design; the only adornment a palette of black-and-white landscape photographs on the walls. Bringing the colour, however, is chef-patron Shigeki Tominaga’s menu, which makes the most of the prefecture’s treasure trove of seafood and mountain fare in a tight selection of Italian classics – albeit some displaying a Japanese twist. Highlights from the à la carte blackboard include a cheese-rich carbonara, which wouldn’t taste out of place in Rome, and an indulgent aosa (sea lettuce) cream pasta. With only 14 seats, a maximum of three parties can be seated at one time: book ahead.
