Mibu

Tokyo, Japan

A culinary legend. Mibu takes the exclusivity of Japan's ichigen-san okotowari (invitation only, or more accurately, ‘no first-time/drop-in customers’) dining experiences to a whole new level. There's no menu, no website and no published opening times. The phone is rarely answered. To get a seat, you must be invited by a ‘member’ (who is allowed to choose one night a month each year) as one of their permitted seven guests (there is a capacity of just eight seats). Ferran Adrià lists Mibu in his top five places to eat, with chef Hiroshi Ishida’s cooking said to have brought the El Bulli legend to tears.
