Hashem Restaurant

Amman, Jordan

Hashem is a Jordanian institution, having been open for 50 years and having welcomed dignitaries from all over the globe, on a mission to taste the country's most authentic cuisine. An unassuming, 24-hour apen-air fast food joint might not be what you're expecting based on that description, however this is widely considered the ultimate destination for a taste of the real Jordan. The wholly vegetarian menu is largely made up of falafel (which local sources claim originated in Jordan), pulses including bean and chickpea-based dishes, grains and a selection of fried dishes from stewed tomatoes to chicken livers. There's a mix of covered and uncovered tables to choose from where you're likely to see several generations of the same family, reminiscing over the same dishes they've been enjoying here for decades
