Shams El Balad began as a small flower shop focused on design and sustainability before evolving into a breakfast café serving dishes rarely found outside Jordanian home kitchens. Its success transformed the space into a full-service restaurant, cultural venue and concept store known for its architectural charm. Inside the converted ancient villa, locals gather to chat and connect over good food and art. he dishes are sustainably minded, hearty and uncomplicated, created by chef Qais Malhas, son of the owners. The in-house bread is baked using locally sourced heirloom flour, while plates such as green whipped soft labneh with seasonal pressed leaves and parsley ljjeh – a frittata made with parsley, onion, labneh and sumac – offer refined takes on Middle Eastern comfort classics. Order a cup of Shams chai, relax in the leafy courtyard and soak up the wealth of Jordanian culture that surrounds you.
