Housed in a heritage villa on Sursock Street, this Lebanese restaurant- café-artisan shop is charming. It’s been beautifully restored by Kanz’s parent organisation, the Lebanon-based charity Beit el Baraka. Almost everything you see, from the mirrors to the tiles, the furniture to the cutlery, has been donated, much of it crafted locally. Indeed, all the proceeds from Beit Kanz – designed as a hub of dialogue, food and the arts – goes towards supporting Beit el Baraka’s vulnerable families. Gather inside or sit alfresco among the fragrant jasmine plants and citrus trees, for food that is authentic to the core, with recipes that celebrate ancestral skills using homegrown ingredients. You’ll find all the classics – hot and cold mezze, nayye and fatteh, as well as more substantial mains grilled over flames. Like what you eat? You can pick up all manner of handmade edible treats at the épicerie, while the boutique showcases local artisanal talent.
