Cabinet 8 KL

Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia

Just a street over from Jalan Petaling, the buzzy core of Kuala Lumpur’s Chinatown, Cabinet 8 looks rather unassuming from the outside. Fronted by an illuminated sign for ‘Neighbour Club’ – the bar’s daytime, retro-style shop counterpart – you’d never imagine that inside it’s sultry and grown up, with sleek wooden tables, low brass lighting and booths for group drinks out with colleagues or friends. Many of the serves incorporate tea; in fact, an entire section of the menu is dedicated to it, with oolong, lapsang souchong, pu’er and jasmine distillates worked into classic drinks. Other options use local fruits and spices such as ambarella, jackfruit or Sarawak black pepper. Any other liquid creations still take an entirely different direction, such as a burger-inspired Double Special, a savoury pour featuring instant noodle seasoning and paired with a little slider for consumption. One thing this bar isn’t is boring.
