Casa Polanco
Mexico City, Mexico
As its name suggests, this boutique hotel promises homely stays in Mexico City’s prestigious Polanco neighbourhood. While the neoclassical mansion dates back to the 1940s, a meticulous four-year restoration by architect Claudio Gantous in 2022 preserved historic details while adding a contemporary wing. Today its 19 rooms and suites are outfitted with walnut wood floors, rattan accents, furniture spanning multiple eras and wrought-iron windows overlooking the leafy Lincoln Park. Elsewhere the house celebrates the nation’s craftsmanship, displaying beautiful sculptures, handmade textiles and contemporary Mexican artworks. The decor is so striking that the building has been recognised by Mexico’s National Institute of Fine Arts, honouring the woodworkers, sculptors, and designers that worked on the property. Beautiful design features extend into the hotel’s Veranda restaurant, which serves up chilaquiles amid lofty ceilings, while the library spills out onto a peaceful cigar patio.
