Bucharest is abuzz with a new wave of young chefs keen to elevate Romanian cuisine and heirloom ingredients. Bistro Ateneu’s Alexandru Dumitru (one of the country’s top chefs) is leading the charge. A stone’s throw from the neoclassical Athenaeum concert hall, this small, homely restaurant puts a farm-to-table concept at the fore. Pleasant, personable staff and playful decor provide the backdrop to accomplished modern incarnations of traditional Romanian fare. Think parsley soup, roasted bone marrow with horseradish crust, zander from the Danube and slow-cooked Mangalitsa pork belly with polenta and truffle. Excellent wine cellar, to boot.
