Set within a glass-clad dining room amid the rolling vines of Constantia’s winelands – the epicentre of a new wave of culinary outposts – Beyond is the latest masterpiece from the team behind award-winning Cape Town restaurants Greenhouse and FYN. Opened during the first year of the pandemic by Peter Tempelhoff, Ashley Moss and Jennifer Hugé, it channels a spirt of simplicity and provenance that lets the beauty of quality ingredients do the talking. By the same token, chef Julia de Toit eschews frills and embellishments in the crafting of an unpretentious, understated menu fuelled by small producers and local farmers – masters in artisan, rare-breed, heirloom produce – within the vicinity of the Buitenverwachting Winery it calls home. The result is a concise yet colourful story of local terroir seen under the spotlight of global influence. Ostrich carpaccio is charred over coals before being served alongside roast onion ponzu, miso mayo and shiitake mushrooms, Kalahari beef fillet comes with wild radish flowers, fermented chips, peppercorn cream and dill hollandaise, while Cape fish plays bedfellow to tomato risotto, coastal plants and bouillabaisse. The pared-back space complete with large wooden tables decorated with hanging dried floral arrangements from the estate draws the stunning South African landscape within, while glasses topped up with excellent bins from an extensive wine list will keep you lingering.
