Johannesburg, South Africa

An easy-going Johannesburg haunt with a standout wine list that’s on every visitor’s hit list. Born during the pandemic and raised by a dedicated, youthful local team, you’ll find it laying claim to modern space on Parkhurst’s on-trend 4th Avenue, with an open frontage and convivial spirit. Heroing regional ingredients, consider it a neighbourhood fine diner that swerves the superfluous and hones in on pure flavour. The wide-reaching menu takes a bold route from Asian-inspired katifi prawns with tom yum and coconut and tuna tataki with papaya and a rooibos and dashi broth, to European stalwarts with a twist such as confit duck leg with beetroot and sweet potato, and pork belly with apple, vanilla, parsnip and Parmesan-braised cabbage. Not forgetting South African mainstays: ostrich fillet with fennel, plum and liquorice, beef potjie (an emblematic stew cooked in a raised cast-iron pot) with black garlic. Clean, contemporary presentation is a given and dishes are designed to be ordered either as part of a make-your-own tasting menu, or as a larger main – it’s up to you. Interesting South African wines form the bedrock of the list, which is flecked with the odd international visitor.
