Cañete

Barcelona, Spain

Cañete’s the kind of place you’ll go back to time and again. Don’t let the location (just off touristy La Rambla) put you off – flanked by grafitti-tagged front doors, it’s as much for locals as it is well-informed visitors. The hybrid space – think bar meets bistro – serves up a roster of classics, paying fine-dining attention to flavour profiles and super-fresh produce like it’s going out of fashion. Joy-filled dishes run from single bites to sharing raciones, and while you may jostle for space, no bother, this is the kind of joint where dining cheek by jowl only adds to the experience. Wait for a counter seat – they’re the best in house – and soak up the lively repertoire between fun-time staff as they move plates faster than you can ask for another glass of cava. Best to order a couple of snacks – perhaps silken slivers of jamón Ibérico and perfectly-salted pan con tomate – to start and keep an eye on what the regulars are eating. Rolling paellas give a nod to the owner’s Sevillian heritage, boquerones are straight from the Catalan fish market, while the city’s iconic bomba – a spicy meatball – represents its region with pride. Like the menu reads: ‘F*ck Your Diet’ – go hungry, leave happy.
