The Hind's Head

Bray, UK

Just moments from The Fat Duck, voted The World's Best Restaurant 2005, The Hind's Head is a more laid-back gastropub from culinary heavyweight Heston Blumenthal. Set within a carefully restored 15th-century building, its low beams, panelled walls and characterful nooks and crannies evoke the long history of this storied Berkshire village. The kitchen celebrates hearty British classics – think pea and ham soup, shepherd's pie, oxtail and kidney pudding and strawberry Eton mess – all prepared with thoughtful care and top-quality ingredients. And of course, you can't miss the signature scotch egg to start, and the fish and chips, served with triple-cooked chips, mushy peas, curry sauce, 'chippy dip' (which tastes like the scraps at the bottom of the fish and chip bag) and a pickled onion malt vinegar spray. This being Blumenthal, tradition rarely goes untouched: expect playful twists and more inventive dishes, from snail hash to chocolate wine for dessert. Tasting menus can be enjoyed in The Vicar's Room, an intimate private dining space for events, while cocktails are served in the Royal Lounge Bar.
