Planque

London, UK

This East London spot has won plenty of acclaim in recent years, graduating from a wine drinker’s haunt to one of Hackney’s hottest tables. The setting does much of the work: located under a pair of railway arches, with exposed brick, concrete floors, an impressive, glass-wrapped cellar and mid-century modern furnishings that balance rawness with polish, a tension that carries through to the food. Dishes here are minimalist: a razor clam and sea lettuce tartelette is fresh, crunchy and saline; the beef tartare arrives with the theatre of a silky pepper sauce poured tableside; while the pig’s head and morel pithivier is multilayered, gamey perfection, cut through with a beautifully dressed green salad. Everything here is unpretentious, chic and delicious, and for those aforementioned wine lovers, watch out for frequent collaborations with guest chefs and producers.
