The Barbary
London, UK
Named after the Barbary Coast (the area settled by the Berbers in the Atlas Mountains of Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia and Libya), this vibrant spot puts a contemporary spin on North African classics. The narrow dining room wraps around a horseshoe-shaped central kitchen counter, creating a somewhat cinematic setting; diners sit shoulder-to-shoulder as dishes are delivered at an impressive rate, and the scent of spices and charcoal fills the air. Grab a stool at the kitchen bar to watch a young, talented team construct beautifully balanced small sharing plates that are big on flavour; like harissa prawns with cucumber labneh and chewy Jerusalem bagels dunked in za'atar. The wine list is as tight as the service, with some interesting Croatian and Israeli varietals. A word of caution: get here early or expect to queue.
