The Londoner

London, UK

Few hotels can boast of a more iconic address than The Londoner: six years in the making, and costing a whopping £500 million, this vast Leicester Square hotel aimed to bring some elegance back to the British capital’s (admittedly) drably dressed Theatreland. 16 stories of glittering, glamourous hotel later, it has largely succeeded. Banish fears of stereotypical London scenes now: suitably for a hotel housed in an old movie theatre, The Londoner is packed with star quality. From the serene basement spa to its rooftop Japanese restaurant, this modern central palace, with 350 guest rooms and 35 suites, brings class to this part of the UK capital. Deep beneath Leicester Square, The Retreat is a hotel highlight. It has a fully equipped gym, sauna, steam room and mesmerically turquoise pool, all worlds away from the chaos at street level. Dining offers the same Jekyll and Hyde treatment: from the rooftop heights of the hotel’s decadent izakaya, 8, the babble of city life is visible but inaudible. Elsewhere, the hotel takes inspiration from theatre-lore and literary sources to serve up drama-driven food and cocktails at Whitcomb’s, The Stage and Joshua’s Tavern. In all, it’s a very good show.
