Tapping into the national zeitgeist of putting the spotlight on unsung natural wine producers, Underdog is a cheerful South Austin wine bar with a pedigree that is nothing to bark at: Richard Hargreave managed wine programmes for the Momofuku Group in the US and Sydney, and his partner Claudia Lee has a background in marketing and public relations for Pernod Ricard. Their pup Squid, a rescue, serves as mascot. In the sunny space, the duo conjure up playful Korean-American dishes that pair well with a bold, frequently rotating wine list that centers on sustainable, low-intervention and biodynamic wines from well-regarded wine regions across the globe. Buffered with a retail space for bottles to-go and other goodies, the bar has brought a welcome, peppy energy to the Bouldin Creek neighbourhood.
