A restaurant that pirouettes around the phrase ‘buena comida, buena vida’, meaning ‘good food, good life’, has to be a good thing. This modern Mexican, in Detroit’s historic Midtown district, sparks joy the moment you walk in, thanks to its warm-minimalism aesthetic. The menu is a Mexico City and Oaxaca flavourbomb, with one section devoted to masa (dough made from nixtamalised corn) featuring handmade enchiladas layered with duck, salsa verde and cheese; tostadas piled high with tuna, chipotle aioli and avocado; and carrot tinga and crema fresca-filled tetelas. Other dishes are cooked on the wood-fired hearth, a highlight being the asada del día – juicy grilled meat served with onions, tortillas and a smoky salsa. The bar is a very agreeable place to perch; order one of the sharing plates and make your way through the agave-forward cocktails, where tequilas and mezcals are infused with chilli and juniper.
