Bavel
Los Angeles, US
This airy warehouse space in LA's flourishing Arts District is filled with the smells and tastes of the Middle East. Building on the success of their enormously popular Italian restaurant, Bestia, husband-and-wife team Ori Menashe and Genevieve Gergis explore cuisines from a different part of the world at Bavel, tapping into their family roots in Israel, Morocco, Turkey and Egypt. One could make a meal of the various flatbreads and spreads alone. Here, bowls of creamy, chunky hummus and smoky baba ghanoush are served with pillowy pita, which comes blistered or fried. Kebabs, fried quail, grilled prawns and kibbeh nayyeh all feature, though the slow-roasted lamb neck shawarma is not to be missed. Cocktails, such as the old fashioned made with date and lamb fat-infused bourbon, add to the experience.
