Most things chef Enrique Olvera touches turn to gold. See his flagship restaurant Pujol, in Mexico City, which graces the upper echelons of The World’s 50 Best Restaurants list on the regular. Or New York’s Cosme, also a regular on the list. Now meet Damian, Cosme’s ‘twin brother’ and a recent addition to the competitive Downtown LA scene. Offering stylish cuisine founded on Mexican culture and influenced by the foodways of the Pacific coast, along with easy Southern Californian hospitality, it’s a winner for locals and visitors alike. The industrial, concrete dining room is warmed up by soft-hued furnishings, verdant greenery and of course Olvera’s bright cuisine. Championing Californian produce, the menu plays a game of surf and turf. High-end plays on duck al pastor aside delicately plated ceviche with yuzu kosho zing. Truffle and gruyère-laced quesadilla followed by sweet apple tamales with amaranth. This is exciting food in an inviting Golden State space.
