Night + Market Song

Los Angeles, US

Kris Yenbamroong didn’t’ follow a traditional chef’s path. With no formal training, his know-how comes straight from source: time spent in Thailand, and his parents, whose restaurant he transformed into the inaugural Night + Market in West Hollywood. Following on, in Silver Lake, Song (Thai for ‘two’) picks up on the kicky flavours and kitsch vibes of the original with aplomb. It’s bright, brash and always buzzing with a devoted following of hard-core regulars. Transporting guests to far-flung climes, the likes of lip-tingling larb gai and fragrant gai tod naeng noi – fried chicken in nam prik noom with roast chillies, shallots and garlic – prove evocative culinary snapshots of Chang Rai’s alleys. Elsewhere, expect market-fresh pad Thai, faithful som tum and sour pork and crispy rice salads, plus an exciting list of natural wines to back it all. Be prepared to wait – they don’t take bookings – but know that it’s worth it: this is some of the city’s finest Thai cooking.
