Night + Market Song
Los Angeles, US
Kris Yenbamroong didn't follow a traditional chef's path. With no formal training, his know-how comes straight from source: time spent in Thailand and his parents, whose restaurant he transformed into the inaugural Night + Market in West Hollywood. Following on in Silver Lake, Song (Thai for 'two') picks up on the kicky flavours and kitsch vibes of the original with aplomb (there's also another outpost in Venice). It's bright, brash and forever buzzing with a devoted following of regulars. Transporting guests to far-flung climes, the likes of lip-tingling larb gai and fragrant gai tod naeng noi evoke culinary snapshots of Chiang Rai's alleys. Elsewhere, expect market-fresh pad Thai, faithful som tum and sour pork and crispy rice salads, plus an exciting list of natural wines to back it all. They take bookings or you can try your luck with a walk-in but be prepared to wait. It's worth it though: this is some of LA's finest Thai cooking.
