Head to the Los Feliz neighbourhood to find LA’s temple to agave. Where most of the world has become familiar with the fan-favourites of tequila and mezcal, Mírate unearths deep cuts and hyper-regional specialty distillates from across Mexico to give them their time in the limelight, most of which are scouted out personally by beverage director Max Reis. Think Pre-Hispanic fermented tepache, tejuino and pulque, among others. Cocktails at the bar make use of its extensive range of lesser-known spirits, utilised in mostly classic drinks. The El Guero, named after Mariscos El Guero, located south of the border in Ensenada, is its take on the margarita, with avocado-washed tequila, cactus granita, coconut and cucumber-kelp garnish. Other cocktails make the most of Californian sunshine, with a mostly tropical-inflected drinks list. Not in the mood for agave? Not a problem. It also houses an extensive collection of Oaxacan rum. Make sure to grab Tu Compa – its canned paloma – on the way out.
