Spending an evening at Somni is a little like taking a willing tumble down Alice in Wonderland's rabbit hole – along the way, you'll encounter a towering yellow giraffe, a rainbow bull's head and a courtyard filled with celestial cloud-like sculptures, all centred around a slick white dining space with a dramatic chef's counter at its heart. But it's not only the surreal setting that gives the place a dream-like quality; influenced by molecular gastronomy (think foams, gels and optical illusions), the food is seemingly plucked from another plane, too. Each of the belt-looseningly extensive tasting menu's carefully constructed courses is designed to surprise and delight. And the creative force behind it all? Aitor Zabala, a Barcelona-born chef who worked at some of Spain's most influential modern fine-dining restaurants, including the fabled El Bulli. Somewhat unusually, Somni does not offer wines by the glass. Instead, a wine, non-alcoholic or hybrid 'maridatge' pairing is de rigueur.
