Sunset Tower

Los Angeles, US

Sunset Boulevard’s 1930s golden girl hotel has a name as iconic as its history. Could a landmark Hollywood hotel – with former guests as glitzy as Greta Garbo and Clark Gable – have a better moniker than the Sunset Tower? This 14-floor stay borders Beverley Hills and has had a few revamps in its time. The most recent, by New York hotelier Jeff Klein, was notable for bringing its old-school va-va-voom back. Interiors remain Art Deco with 81 rooms and suites – of which there are 12 classes – dressed up in nostalgic, retro colours and styles. There’s accents of rosewood and brass paired with a colour palette borrowed from Marylin Monroe’s wardrobe, all peachy creams and pale pinks. The quirky service at the tower is well-known. Case in point: fresh-baked chocolate chip cookies are left at turndown. Downstairs, black and white photographs line the hotel walls. Famous faces are easy to spot – whether in frames or in real life. Red-carpet regulars frequently flock to the hotel’s Joanna Vargas Spa in search of her much-heralded facials. Just don’t try to take your own photos; the rule is strictly no paps, although pups are welcomed with open arms. The Tower Bar and Restaurant plates up Americana favourites at night, while the poolside terrace is a LA favourite for all-day causal dining.
