Commander's Palace

New Orleans, US

Located in a turquoise-and-white Victorian mansion, this legendary restaurant has been feeding New Orleans residents since 1873. Everything the proprietors do is a tribute to matriarch Ella Brennan, aka Miss Ella, the city's grande dame restaurateur and culinary trailblazer. That said, while respecting the past, chef Meg Bickford brings her own spin to the kitchen, taking inspiration from Creole and Louisiana cuisine. 90 per cent of ingredients are sourced within 100 miles of the restaurant's back door, the dishes layered with unmistakable local flavour. Stars of the menu include smoked pecan crusted fish, snapping turtle soup and lacquered stuffed quail. The Queen of Creole Desserts, a bread pudding soufflé, is finished tableside with warm whiskey cream. Book a table for the weekend jazz brunch offering an authentic Big Easy experience complete with warm southern hospitality. The cocktail list is also excellent: try a 'Gold Rush'.
