As hard to find (look for the small ‘AB’ on the metal door) as it is unmissable, this small but always busy space is a mecca for speakeasy fans – and a regular on the World’s 50 Best Bars list. It was opened in 2012 by Ross and Michael McIlroy to replace the influential Milk & Honey, which moved to new, larger premises. The two owners – both longstanding Milk & Honey bartenders – have maintained the hip Lower East Side feel but the vibe is now more relaxed. Once you gain entry, expect a conversation with the staff about your likes rather than a menu, with the perfect drink concocted to suit your mood. Drinks lean towards the classics, albeit with a twist, although the ‘Penicillin’ and ‘Paper Plane’ – two well-travelled cocktails – were both invented here.
