Shukette

New York, US

Who said that the humble kebab couldn’t be a thing of beauty? This lively Chelsea eaterie, festooned with neon signage and with informal countertop seating that overlooks the busy kitchen, provides a new perspective on Middle Eastern staples. Blistered breads, silky smooth hummus, crunchy salads and juicy kebabs; they’re all served up on-point, proving that simple really is sublime. Chef Ayesha Nurdjaja is also behind sister restaurant Shuka in SoHo, a marginally more formal spot, and here ends meals playfully with elaborate diner-style soft serve ice creams crowned with nostalgic chocolate, sprinkles and fresh pomegranate seeds. It’s an acknowledgement that not only is food about fun, it’s constantly in evolution. And even when moving forward, we can honour the culinary traditions of the past.
