La' Shukran
Washington DC, US
For first-timers, finding La’ Shukran is an adventure in itself, guided by the sound of Middle Eastern music drifting down an alleyway. Behind its green door, a monochrome-striped staircase leads to the dining room: louche and low-lit, with a soundtrack that hops from Arab funk to Algerian raï. Settle into a velvet banquette, order up an arak, and consider what to pick from the Levantine-inspired menu. Built around big-hitting flavours, it makes for a persuasive read, running from black lime-dusted Maryland crab, with whipped labneh and green harissa, to a succulent, whole fried quail to dip in tahini ranch dressing. It’s playful yet accomplished cooking from chef Michael Rafidi, whose other restaurant, Albi, is No.6 on North America’s 50 Best Restaurants 2026. The wine list is just as compelling, sectioned by song titles, while the cocktails and mocktails riff on regional flavours like orange blossom, date and za’atar. No reservation? You might get lucky with a walk-in seat at the bar.
