Maydān

Washington DC, US

Owner Rose Previte makes North African and Middle Eastern flavours the focus at Maydān, one of DC’s most exciting restaurants, which is located in an industrial loft-like space organised around a central wood-fired kitchen. The tasting menu – called tawle, which means table in Arabic – is served family style, featuring starters like honey-soaked dates, spreads like hummus and walnut casik, plus a centrepiece dish of meat or veggies and condiments such as chermoula and harissa. Bread is made in clay ovens, and guests are encouraged to use the bread as utensils, because “bread brings the meal together and bread brings people together". As a complement to the food, cocktails, beer and alcohol-free options are available, and the wine list features an exciting by-the-glass selection and bottles from Lebanon, Georgia, Morocco and South Africa, among other source locations. An a la carte menu is available for tables of four or less only.
