From custom rose gardens to private dinners on the Great Wall of China, these properties rise to the occasion.
There is a particular tone that exists in the best hotels in the world. Calm. Unflustered. These properties operate with the energy of someone who has just been asked for something completely unreasonable and is already figuring out how to make it happen. At the finest establishments, "no" is rarely the final answer. Luxury hospitality has always been about anticipation, but increasingly it has become about imagination. The guest who wants a dinner reservation can easily secure one. The guest who wants the beach rearranged for a surprise proposal timed precisely to the tide? That's more interesting. And yes, it has happened.
It would be easy to dismiss these as extravagances of the ultra-wealthy. But that misses the point. Here, in their own words, are the people who said yes.
Mohit Malhotra, General Manager
The Oberoi Udaivilas, Udaipur
"True luxury hospitality is not defined by grandeur alone, but by the care and sensitivity with which a moment is crafted. One particularly memorable request came from a guest who wished to recreate a childhood memory of dining under the stars beside a quiet lake, complete with a specific regional dish prepared exactly as they remembered it decades ago. What made this special was not its scale, but its emotional significance. Our guest described the aromas, the texture of the dish, the feel of the evening breeze and even the sound of nearby water. It was clear that this was not simply about food, but about reliving a treasured memory.

Our team approached the request with both precision and empathy. Our chefs researched traditional preparation methods to recreate the flavours as authentically as possible, engaging in detailed conversations with the guests to refine the nuances. At the same time, we crafted a secluded lakeside setting within the property, with soft lighting, understated decor, and attentive yet unobtrusive service. The evening unfolded beautifully. As the dish was served and the first bite taken, a visible pause followed. The guest smiled and said quietly, 'This is exactly how I remember it.'"
Tiffany Lai, Hotel Manager
Hotel Bel-Air, Los Angeles
Hotel Bel-Air spans 18 acres of landscaped gardens, where terracotta pathways wind through ficus, orange blossom and other seasonal blooms
"For an event on our iconic Swan Lake, a guest asked that we add even more "garden to our garden." They wanted to add more natural foliage to the roughly 200 plant species to provide the utmost privacy and beauty for their celebration. The hotel gardeners did not waste a moment and worked to add cut flowers to existing trees and foliage and to plant new rose bushes to expand upon the treasured grounds of our property. By the end, it was a wonderland of blooms creating the perfect, colourful and private space for our guests to enjoy their special moment surrounded by the fragrances of rose, jasmine and more."
Ayse Tunçel, Guest Relations Manager
MaçaKizi, Bodrum
"We recently had a request from a long-stay guest with very specific dining preferences. She requested meals from her home country, wanting each day's menu to feel authentic and familiar, almost like a home-away-from-home. At the time, Bodrum had very few options for this cuisine, and sourcing both ingredients and a local chef who could meet her standards required creativity and coordination.

Each day, our team worked closely with the chef to plan menus, source fresh ingredients, and adjust dishes to meet her expectations. Even small details, like the way spices were blended or the presentation of a dish, mattered to her. It became a daily collaboration, and although it was challenging, it was rewarding to see her delight at each meal. By the end of her stay, the guest could enjoy each meal exactly as she hoped, making her long visit feel seamless, personal and truly memorable."
Felix Murillo, General Manager
Four Seasons Resort Tamarindo, Jalisco
"At Tamarindo, the greatest logistical challenge is often the very thing that makes the experience so special: our remote location. The resort sits within a 3,000-acre nature reserve on a pristine stretch of Pacific coastline, where the landscape is intentionally preserved and largely untouched.
Guests at Four Seasons Resort Tamarindo can explore beyond the beach, from jungle hikes and farm tours to dolphin spotting along the Pacific coast
One holiday season, a family staying in one of our private beachfront houses asked if Santa Claus could make a special visit to the beach home, but not for his usual, speedy appearance. They hoped that Santa might stay for lunch with the whole family. On Christmas Day, Santa appeared over the Pacific coastline, arriving by paratrike before gently gliding down to the beach. After making his greetings, he made his way up to the house where the family was waiting. Instead of a brief hello, he helped make homemade guacamole and tacos and joined the family for their holiday meal. What made the moment special wasn't the spectacle of the arrival, but the intention behind it. The family simply wanted to create a holiday memory that their children would never forget, and our team was thrilled to bring that to life."
Harun Dursun, Managing Director
Jumeirah Marsa Al Arab, Dubai
The Presidential Suite at Jumeirah Marsa Al Arab comes with a dedicated butler and a private plunge pool
"One of the most unexpected requests we received came from a guest who once asked us to 'make time slow down'. He was hosting an intimate family dinner in his suite overlooking the Arabian Gulf and wanted no interruptions, no visible service and no sense of orchestration. The evening was meant to feel as though the outside world had paused. Our dedicated butler team reimagined the entire service flow. Dishes were prepared and plated discreetly nearby, alternative service corridors were used to eliminate visible movement; lighting was timed to transition with the sunset, and all calls were diverted. Once dinner began, no one entered the suite unless absolutely necessary. Nothing dramatic happened that evening, and that was exactly the point. The evening was a perfect reflection of our philosophy. True luxury is not about doing more. It is about knowing when to step back, quietly and precisely, so that guests can simply enjoy the moment."
Andy Guan, General Manager
Mandarin Oriental Qianmen, Beijing
"One of the most unusual requests we received came from one of our VIPs, who wanted to organise a birthday treat for a close friend. She explained that her friend loved the outdoors, which inspired us to consider something quite ambitious: a celebration on the Great Wall. When our guest also shared that she hoped to bring it to life within just a week. The Great Wall is not the easiest setting for a private dinner, and almost every detail had to be arranged from scratch. Our team worked closely with the relevant authorities to secure special permissions, reserve a private section, and ensure the dinner respected both safety and preservation protocol. The team arrived hours before the guests, made several trips to transport equipment, table settings, flowers and ingredients to the location, and carefully prepared the meal while maintaining the quality of each dish.
As the world's largest man-made project, The Great Wall of China covers more than 13,170 miles
One memorable detail involved the celebratory birthday noodles, a traditional Chinese dish symbolising longevity. Freshly cooked noodles would not have travelled well, so the team created cold noodles instead, honouring the tradition while adapting to the unique setting. The result was a wonderful evening and a perfect example of how we strive to craft exceptional experiences, even in the most unexpected places."
