Fico

Buenos Aires, Argentina

When chef-owners Estefanía Maiorano and Martín Sclippa were deciding on a name for their restaurant in the personality-packed Villa Crespo neighbourhood, they plumped on Fico, the Italian word for ‘fig’. Why? The pair, who met under celebrity chef Narda Lepes at the Narda Comedor restaurant, wanted to open an establishment that epitomised the conviviality and hospitality of Italy (the fruit being deeply ingrained in the country’s culture and cuisine), not to mention its deeply rooted passion for high-quality, homey food. It’s a small affair, with wooden tables down one side and the open kitchen along the other, where the team works seamlessly on the seemingly simple-yet-complex dishes. The meal usually starts with freshly baked sourdough, followed by the likes of stuffed pickled peppers or grilled catch of the day served with salsa verde. If it's available, order the signature caladona, a doughnut filled with aioli and topped with squid. But absolutely leave room for dessert as this is where Maiorano’s training as a pastry chef shines. Poached pear with rosemary honey and caramelised brioche? Fig leaf ice cream with a black sesame foam? Delicious.
