The Standard Group introduced its rebellious spin-off brand, StandardX, in 2024, wisely picking Melbourne for its launch pad. The city’s creative Fitzroy district is a perfect fit for the lively hotel, with neighbouring vintage stores, eclectic art galleries and indie music venues shaping the hotel’s cultural programming – think wine tastings, DJ sets and even tarot card readings. Design is by no means standard, with an eclectic mix of furnishings, textiles and fabrics, plus striking sculptures. Rooms, ranging from cosy boltholes to spacious suites, tend to be a little more low-key – but still promise plenty of character, with bold striped carpets and woodworks by local artist Jane Sinclair. Living up to Melbourne’s foodie reputation, the hotel offers all-day French cuisine at Bistro X, plus sky-high nightcaps at the fittingly named On Top rooftop bar. And while in-room amenities are few and far between, artisan coffee is thankfully non-negotiable.
