Karl Mraz wasn't seeking star status when he opened this small neighbourhood bistro on Vienna's outskirts – but that's what he got. Today, son Markus, and grandson Manuel are the creative force in the kitchen. They've brought a more sophisticated outlook while maintaining the convivial simplicity at Mraz's heart. The playful, shifting tasting menu features 13 courses comprising small dishes that don't scrimp on big flavours, each one designed to turn tradition on its head. A proclivity for seasonal Austrian ingredients, from 'nose-to-tail, root-to-flower and fin-to-head', plays out in the likes of pide with lardo and pine spruce; grilled asparagus with whey-habanero sauce; cod with kaffir lime beurre blanc; and fig-leaf ice cream sandwiches. The wine list features more than 1,600 pours, or if you fancy the non-alcoholic pairing, you'll be sipping kombucha, tea and house-made juices. Enjoy your visit?
