Bistrot du Nord

Antwerp, Belgium

The Bistro du Nord could have sprung to life from pretty much any decade of the 20th century, with a net curtain in the window half obscuring a timeless design of tiled floors, bentwood chairs, starched tablecloths and wood panelling, all lit by elegant, Tiffany-esque lamps. Bistro du Nord lives up to its name not only with its location in a residential district of Antwerp city centre up towards the docks, but also a menu offering Flemish classics of eels in a green herb sauce, and Ostend prawn croquettes. However, the kitchen takes as much inspiration from France as Flanders, so expect bistro dishes from across the border too: Gillardeau oysters, goose liver terrine and ox tongue in Madeira with sausage and crispy veal brains, perhaps.
