Popular Cocina Boliviana

La Paz, Bolivia

It would be too easy to walk straight past Popular Cocina Boliviana with its subtle signage and azure blue awnings but you'd be missing out if you did. This unassuming little spot was placed at number 85 in last year's list of The 50 Best Restaurants in Latin America, outranking far fancier destinations to snag the prize. Only open for lunch from Monday to Saturday, there's a daily three-course menu available hat's guaranteed to give you a real taste of popular Bolivian food (see? It does what it says on the tin). Starters could include stuffed yucca fritters or chank'a de pollo chicken soup while main course options might be baked macaroni cheese or fried trout finished off with a dessert of churros. It might sound like rustic fare but presentation is flawless and the simply-furnished dining room has a charm all of its own.
