Charco Restaurante

São Paulo, Brazil

In both décor and cuisine, Charco plays homage to the southern Brazilian state of Rio Grande do Sul, where husband-and-wife team Tuca Mezzomo and Nathalia Gonçalves both grew up. On the main menu, Mezzomo dishes up grilled fare such as barbecued ancho steaks, prawn toast or umami-rich mushrooms with smoked pumpkin purée, while Gonçalves creates ice creams and desserts using Brazilian fruits such as jabuticaba. The restaurant itself has a southern vibe, set in an old house with original exposed brick walls and the addition of simple wooden furniture, which makes for an intimate yet laidback ambience. Look out for Charco’s own charcuterie and cold cuts such as buffalo stracciatella and coppa, which are best washed down with a glass of natural wine from the list of South American labels.
