Transplanted, in spirit at least, from Amsterdam's canal district to Toronto's King West, Dutch speakeasy XXX is one of the city's more theatrical drinking experiences. Cosy and compact at just 20 seats, it lies concealed beneath Dutch-Indo restaurant Little Sister, within a Victorian townhouse – access granted only to those who procure playing cards from the staff upstairs and present them to a sliding panel when called. Inside, exposed brick, cement and a green-tiled bar set the scene, the soundtrack spanning Europop to 80s retro. The vibe is deliberately casual, the cocktails anything but: experimental and ingredient-led, such as the Thirst Trap with Balinese spice infused vodka, limoncello, citrus and strawberry tea, lemongrass, galangal, lime leaf and coconut.
