Sunnys Chinese

Toronto, Canada

With its checked floor, pistachio-hued tables, neon lighting and Chinese food, this restaurant is a hard spot to place geographically, but that’s kind of the point. Toronto’s boho Kensington Market is a mishmash of flavours, where Jamaican patties, Swedish pastries and Japanese ramen are sold side-by-side, and Sunnys embraces this anything-goes attitude with its eclectic inspiration. In the retro diner-style space, lined with an open kitchen, you’ll get a greatest hits tour from a region-hopping Chinese menu: try husband-and-wife beef with chilli oil from Sichuan; dry fried pork ribs with curry spice from Taiwan; and claypot shrimp with vermicelli and rendered pork fat from Guandong. Even the sweets are diverse, with the Hong Kong-style French Toast smothered in black sesame jam – and drizzled with oolong tea-infused condensed milk – gaining a particularly loyal following.
