The hotel itself, which comprises a clutch of villas, is nestled amid vibrant gardens of bamboo and it’s here, in a handsome building with a gently curved roof that speaks of ancient Chinese architecture, you’ll find La Villa. Floor-to-ceiling windows look out over a lily-padded pond, while inside the decor is sumptuous with dark woods and leather upholstery. Chef Eric Yu heads up the kitchen, creating seasonal set menus that take the landscape and bounteous produce of the Jiangnan region as inspiration, but delivers his own modern, often European interpretation. Delicate dishes, exquisite to look at, might include pulled duck with five spice jelly on brioche; ham risotto with bamboo shoots; and a light-as-a-feather cheese foam served with coconut ice cream.
