The discreet doorway at Mott 32 gives nothing away. But when you descend into the bowels of Standard Chartered Bank, down a mirrored spiral staircase, it's impossible not to do a double take at this Chinese restaurant. It's a sexy combination of colonial-style furnishings and warehouse aesthetic, designed by Joyce Wang. Antique lamps bounce light off silk walls, squishy velvet seating and leather banquettes invite you into dark corners... it feels at once secret and seductive. It's named after 32 Mott Street in New York, where the first Chinese convenience store opened in the 1800s. And yet, modern Chinese is the focus here, drawing from various regions including Canton, Shanghai and Beijing, with the kitchen masterminded by Lee Man Sing (who previously worked at Mandarin Oriental Hong Kong). The signature barbecue prime Ibérico pork is a must, and the xiaolongbao with Kurobuta pork and caviar will make it hard to eat regular dim sum again. The 42-day apple wood-roasted Peking duck, which is cooked on site in a custom-built brick oven, is said to be some of the best in town, and the plant-based alternatives are strong.
