Set in the Latin Quarter, Hotel Monte Cristo pays homage to the great Alexandre Dumas, whose works include the swashbuckling Count of Monte Cristo as well as The Three Musketeers. Its bar, Le 1802, picks up on the theme, named for the year of the author’s birth and specialising in rum: Dumas, as literary geeks may know, was descended from Haitian rum producers. It’s stocked with a dizzying array of rums – around 1,600 and counting – from molasses-based blends to rhums agricoles, and inventive, house-spiced blends. Sign up for a tasting flight, or settle into a velvet club chair and peruse the cocktail list. It’s a boldly unconventional affair, inspired by different materials – like the milky ‘Porcelain’, served in the daintiest of teacups. Naturally, they also excel when it comes to rum-based classics; if in doubt, you can't go wrong with a daiquiri or old fashioned.
