Mokonuts

Paris, France

If you see a queue snaking down Rue Saint-Bernard in the 11th Arrondissement – join it. The line of Parisians are likely waiting for entry to Mokonuts, a popular bakery-café run by Japanese-Lebanese husband-and-wife Moko Hirayama and Omar Koreitem. Together the couple bring punchy Middle Eastern flavours and pretty pastry work to their lunches and sweet treats. Moku (who trained at Ladurée in London and Yam'Tcha in Paris) makes the sugary stuff: tahini cookies; hazelnut and kumquat galette; fig tart with black sesame and macerated lemon. Omar (who has worked with Daniel Boulud in New York and Gordon Ramsay's Savoy Grill in London) takes care of the savoury side, with shrimps in sumac butter; za'atar labneh; eel with braised endive; and saffron risotto with pecorino. They also operate Mokochaya, a few doors down, a café and tea house serving breakfast, bento lunch and Saturday brunch.
