Gritti Palace

Venice, Italy

Positioned on Venice’s Grand canal, with masterpiece-worthy waterway views, the iconic Gritti Palace is a heritage hotel with a history few other stays in the city can compete against. Where others might use the term 'art hotel' to denote edgy, modern interiors, the Gritti employs it to refer to an impressive cultural collection found on the former palace’s walls. Most notable is the Tiziano Vecellio atelier-painted portrait of the palace’s original inhabitant, a 15th-century city Doge, which was bought by the hotel from Sotherby’s in 2016. Elsewhere, you’ll spy a number of Pietro Longhi artworks. The red-brick Gritti building dates from 1457, an elegant property that is itself as much a work of art as the pieces on its walls. Decadently hued rooms promise typically exuberant Venetian hospitality. Of the two restaurants, the more formal Club del Doge is the hotel’s stand-out, while the in-house bar, Longhi, is city renowned. A recent renovation spearheaded by Chuck Chewning has restored this ancient property, which now sits until the Marriott portfolio, back to being fit for royalty, even if it those monarchs to be of the Hollywood kind.
