Perched along a canal just off St. Mark's Square, this legendary bar and restaurant has been channeling the club-like atmosphere of Europe's historic cafes since 1931. Tiny it may be, but its reputation is huge – over the years, everyone from Katherine Hepburn and Peggy Guggenheim to Truman Capote and Ernest Hemingway has settled in for an evening here. Indeed, such is its cultural importance, it was declared a National Landmark in 2001. Now owned by the fourth generation of the Cipriani family, it remains an understated Art Deco cocoon of dark wood and snowy linen where the well-heeled still come to sip bellinis and famously dry martinis. The menu is short and snappy – beef carpaccio drizzled with a zingy, creamy sauce is the signature dish. Other classics include tagliatelle with fresh lobster, gratinated tagliolini with ham, and warm strawberries marinated in white port.
