The St. Regis Venice

Venice, Italy

Venice – a series of small islands criss-crossed with canals and connected by more than 430 bridges – will have your heart. The St. Regis Venice, which is made up of five palazzi, commands a prime position, set right at the beginning of the Canal Grande, directly opposite Santa Maria della Salute church. Indeed, Claude Monet was so enamoured of the view, he painted some of his most famous Impressionist pieces when staying here. Public spaces come with flair – the contemporary Murano glasswork is particularly captivating, notably Ai Weiwei’s frosted ‘White Chandelier’ in the Grand Salone. Dine on Puglian and Venetian dishes in Gio’s, where orders of the day might be chestnut butter-coated pappardelle, lagoon seabass or cuttlefish in Venetian saor sauce. When weather allows, book a table on the Ginori Terrace for aperitivo or order a Santa Maria (their spin on the Bloody Mary) in the richly-hued Arts Bar. Accommodation is more pared back, the neutral-natural tones reflecting both the city’s magical light and the water. Stay in a canal-side room or suite (a considerable number have terraces and balconies) and watch as the gondolas and vaporettos glide gracefully along this famous waterway. There’s a small on-site spa and fitness centre.
